1. Introduction

The Quran kareem is the only recognised holy book of Islam now. Despite Muslims being obliged to believe in the other holy books sent down to the other prophets besides Prophet Muhammad pbuh, due to the alterations to the other holy books of Islam, the current versions of the Torah, Psalms and Bible are not accepted.

2. Holy Books of Islam

As mentioned earlier, there were four recognised holy books in Islam. They are the Torah (Tawrah), Psalms (Zabur), Bible (Injil) and the Quran. Today only the Quran is left as the remaining recognised holy book in Islam.

Besides these books, there are also what is referred to as the earlier scrolls (suhuf al-uulaa) which are broken down into two. These are the scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa. All these books were revealed to the prophets and they are from God.

3. The Earlier Scrolls (Suhuf al-Uulaa)

The Quran Kareem mentioned the term ‘suhufil uuulaa’ in Surah Al-A’la verse 18 which is loosely translated as “former scriptures”.

Tawrat book

Indeed, this is in the former scriptures,

Al-Quran 87:18

The following verse then went on to elaborate to mention ‘suhuf Ibraahiim wa Muusaa’ (scrolls of Abraham and Moses).

The scriptures of Abraham and Moses.

Al-Quran 87:19

The scriptures of Moses and Abraham were also mentioned in Surah An-Najm verses 36 and 37.

Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses

Al-Quran 53:36

And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] –

Al-Quran 53:37

These earlier scriptures were believed to be lost and there is no evidence of any version or remnant of them remaining.

4. Holy Book of Islam – Zabur / Psalms

The book of Zabur (Psalms) was revealed to Prophet Daud a.s (Prophet David).

And your Lord is most knowing of whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And We have made some of the prophets exceed others [in various ways], and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].

Al-Quran 17:55

And We have already written in the book [of Psalms] after the [previous] mention that the land [of Paradise] is inherited by My righteous servants.

Al-Quran 21:105

5. Holy Book of Islam – Taurat / Torah

The book of Taurat (Torah) was sent down to Prophet Moses a.s.

Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allah ] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allah, and they were witnesses thereto. So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the disbelievers.

Al-Quran 5:44Book

6. Holy Book of Islam – Injil / Bible

The Bible was sent down to Prophet Isa a.s. (Jesus). The remaining versions of the Bible or Gospel (as it is known in some places) available currently have undergone multiple editions and changes made by man and henceforth does not represent the true original word of God.

7. Holy Book of Islam – Quran Kareem

The holy book of Islam that is used by Muslims now is the Quran Kareem. It is the only unaltered and unedited version of the word of God and henceforth the only official Holy book of Islam.

Revealed in Arabic over a span of thirteen years, the Quran was conveyed to Prophet Muhammad pbuh by the angel Gabriel. The first verses were revealed in the month of Ramadan in Gua Hira’ and comprises of the verses 1-5 of Surah al-Alaq.

Recite in the name of your Lord who created –

Al-Quran 96:1

Created man from a clinging substance.

AL-Quran 96:2

Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous –

Al-Quran 96:5

The Quran that is known now has been compiled into a book that may be read by anyone. It has also been translated into various languages to enable those who do not know Arabic to be able to understand. Care must be taken though in interpreting the Quran verses in another language because the Arabic language cannot be adequately translated into another language by rote or direct translation. And interpretation of the Quran verses involves a lot of factors which itself is a subject of its own! If in doubt, do refer to recognized Islamic teachers and scholars and the best is to learn from them.

8. Conclusion

Although a Muslim must believe in more than one holy book in Islam, it is very important to note that even though some versions of these books still exist nowadays, only the Quran is the unaltered and unedited word of God. The other holy books of Islam has been corrupted over time and henceforth while Muslims acknowledge them to be from God, that applies to the original unaltered version and not the ones that exist today.

Henceforth, the Quran Kareem is the only Islam holy book now that is used by Muslims worldwide.
